Who can join, how long you can stay, and what it costs
Before you apply
- Age: 17+ to book independently; 18+ on some programs, with under-18s able to join select family or high-school options with parental consent and extra supervision.
- Experience: most placements need none — teaching and childcare roles ask for patience and flexibility rather than qualifications.
- Documents: a background check is required for any placement working with children or vulnerable adults, arranged before you travel.
- Language: basic English is enough almost everywhere; some Spanish helps in Peru but is not required.
- Fitness: conservation and elephant-care placements involve outdoor, physical days, so reasonable fitness is expected.
- Fee and booking: the fee covers accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support; book ahead since start dates are fixed rather than rolling.

Keeping a short placement responsible
A single week is not enough time to take sole responsibility for a classroom, a childcare shift or an animal, so every placement is built around supporting people who already do that work. Local staff lead lessons, care decisions and animal handling; volunteers assist alongside them. The elephant program in Thailand is observation and welfare-based — no riding, bathing or selfies — and childcare placements never leave volunteers alone with children.

Is one week long enough to be useful?
Yes, when the placement is designed for it. A one-week volunteer supports an ongoing local project rather than running one alone, so the classroom, childcare center or conservation site keeps operating exactly as it did before and after your week there.
Can I extend beyond one week?
Some placements can be extended — the Peru kindergarten program runs up to 24 weeks, and the New Zealand conservation project and Thailand elephant program offer longer options too. Talk to your program advisor before booking if you might want more than a single week.
Is a background check required?
Yes, for any placement working with children or vulnerable adults, which covers most one-week teaching and childcare programs. This is arranged as part of booking and sits alongside our child and vulnerable adult protection policy.
What support is available during a one-week placement?
An in-country team meets you on arrival, runs orientation, and stays reachable throughout the week, alongside 24/7 support from Volunteering Solutions. Given the short timeframe, orientation is compact, but it covers the placement, local customs and who to contact if plans change.
How is a one-week program different from a two-week or short-term program?
