How to Volunteer in New Zealand with Volunteering Solutions

To apply for a volunteer program in New Zealand, follow these four simple steps: 

1. Fill out an online application form 

Here you’ll enter your personal information and your chosen volunteer program. You’ll need to know the date on which you want to depart and the number of weeks you’re committed to volunteering. 

Other information required includes:

• Your name, phone number and address
• Gender and date of birth
• Languages you speak and at what level
• Volunteering plans (e.g. who you’re travelling with and dietary requirements)
• Motivations for volunteering

This process usually takes no more than ten minutes. Once you’ve created your account and submitted your application, we’ll be able to set plans in motion to turn your dream into a reality.

2. Pay the application fee

As soon as your application is submitted, you can pay the application fee through our Secure Payment Gateway. This is a one-time payment that covers our administrative efforts to get you to New Zealand on your chosen date. 

The application fee is currently: 

• £179 GBP
• $249 USD
• €229 EUR
• $350 AUD

If you’re not offered a place on our volunteering program, this fee will be refunded in full. However, we strive to ensure that anyone who wants to volunteer with us can. 

3. Confirm and submit supporting documents

Once your payment has been received, you’ll get an email confirming the application process. This means we’re officially working on getting your volunteer journey started! We’ll then invite you to submit supporting documents via your account. 

Supporting documents often differ depending on your chosen opportunity. However, these could include: 

• Your resume or CV
• A current photo
• Valid ID, such as a passport or driving license

We can’t process your application without these documents, so make sure to look out for what we need from you in your email. 

4. Receive your booking confirmation and get packing! 

Five to seven working days after submitting your supporting documents, you will receive your booking confirmation. This confirms your trip details and invites you to make your final payment. Once this is completed, you’ll be set to go! 

Do I Need a Visa to Volunteer in New Zealand? 

No, you don’t need a visa when volunteering in New Zealand as a UK citizen, provided that you don’t receive any gain or reward from your chosen organisation. If you are receiving any rewards for free, you won’t be considered a volunteer and will need to apply for a work visa. A gain or reward could include:

• Monetary payment
• Accommodation, such as boarding 
• Services, including transport
• Goods, such as food or clothing
• Training

However, payment doesn’t include reimbursement for expenses you’ve incurred while performing your volunteer work. With Volunteering Solutions, British nationals don’t require a visa, as our programs don’t exceed six months, and your fee covers the cost of included accommodation, travel and meals. 

Are There Any Other Documents Needed? 

New Zealand allows certain travellers to visit without a traditional visa as long as they have a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). This can be purchased through an app and is usually issued within just 72 hours, and is valid for two years. 

The NZeTA allows UK citizens to stay for up to six months, while individuals from other countries can stay for up to three months. The NZeTA is not necessary for those travelling on a work visa. 

Do I Need Travel Insurance to Volunteer in New Zealand? 

Yes, you need travel insurance to volunteer safely in New Zealand. Insurance covers medical bills and travel interruptions, helping you continue your journey without stress or pressure. Volunteering abroad can be unpredictable, so travel insurance keeps you protected no matter what’s thrown at you. 

When choosing your travel insurance, we recommend checking for policy exclusions and limits. For example, some insurers won’t cover incidents caused by adventure activities, such as scuba diving, hiking and surfing. If you plan to enjoy these activities while in New Zealand, make sure your insurance has you covered.
