Volunteering in New Zealand is an incredibly worthwhile and rewarding experience, offering the opportunity to positively impact the community and environment while immersing yourself in the country’s beautiful landscapes and culture.
Whether you’re drawn to wildlife conservation or community development, New Zealand is a wonderful place to volunteer during your gap year or between class terms. But how do you get the ball rolling on a Kiwi volunteer journey as a UK citizen? We’ll explore everything you need to know below.
When volunteering abroad, preparation is key. There are several ways you can get yourself ready for volunteering in New Zealand, including:
The first step in your volunteering journey is to research what kind of work you’re interested in. New Zealand offers numerous wildlife conservation projects, community-building opportunities, and educational experiences that provide a unique blend of environmental stewardship and cultural immersion.
Take the time to find what aligns with your passions, interests and skills before applying for any programs.
There are several options available for accommodation in New Zealand, including boarding houses, hostels or staying with host families. Volunteering Solutions provides accommodation for volunteers, which can save money, time and stress, and help you immerse yourself in the local community.
New Zealand is considered a safe country for UK citizens to travel to, but its outdoor environment can still be rugged when you’re not used to such conditions. Make sure you’re physically fit and mentally prepared for the demanding activities required by your chosen volunteer program.
Volunteering Solutions programs cover a wide range of expenses, including meals, accommodation, travel and transportation. However, you’ll still need to budget for personal expenses, such as program fees, travel insurance and other incidental costs to make sure your experience is as enjoyable and care-free as possible.

While you may have your heart set on volunteering in New Zealand, it’s essential that an exciting opportunity is available to get involved with. Currently, Volunteering Solutions offers one very exciting opportunity to volunteer in New Zealand: the Conservation Volunteering Program.
This program ranges from one to eight weeks and takes you across multiple locations in New Zealand, helping you see as much of the country as possible during your stay. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to efforts to maintain and expand the island's biodiversity, helping to counter the effects of climate change.
Activities included in this program include:
You’ll be able to make the most of your trip to New Zealand through exciting, meaningful tasks set by your project coordinator. Weekends are free for individual exploration or group activities with your fellow volunteers.

This process usually takes no more than ten minutes. Once you’ve created your account and submitted your application, we’ll be able to set plans in motion to turn your dream into a reality.
Find our online application form here.
As soon as your application is submitted, you can pay the application fee through our Secure Payment Gateway. This is a one-time payment that covers our administrative efforts to get you to New Zealand on your chosen date.
The application fee is currently:
If you’re not offered a place on our volunteering program, this fee will be refunded in full. However, we strive to ensure that anyone who wants to volunteer with us can.
Once your payment has been received, you’ll get an email confirming the application process. This means we’re officially working on getting your volunteer journey started! We’ll then invite you to submit supporting documents via your account.
Supporting documents often differ depending on your chosen opportunity. However, these could include:
We can’t process your application without these documents, so make sure to look out for what we need from you in your email.
Five to seven working days after submitting your supporting documents, you will receive your booking confirmation. This confirms your trip details and invites you to make your final payment. Once this is completed, you’ll be set to go!

No, you don’t need a visa when volunteering in New Zealand as a UK citizen, provided that you don’t receive any gain or reward from your chosen organisation. If you are receiving any rewards for free, you won’t be considered a volunteer and will need to apply for a work visa. A gain or reward could include:
However, payment doesn’t include reimbursement for expenses you’ve incurred while performing your volunteer work. With Volunteering Solutions, British nationals don’t require a visa, as our programs don’t exceed six months, and your fee covers the cost of included accommodation, travel and meals.
New Zealand allows certain travellers to visit without a traditional visa as long as they have a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). This can be purchased through an app and is usually issued within just 72 hours, and is valid for two years.
The NZeTA allows UK citizens to stay for up to six months, while individuals from other countries can stay for up to three months. The NZeTA is not necessary for those travelling on a work visa.
Yes, you need travel insurance to volunteer safely in New Zealand. Insurance covers medical bills and travel interruptions, helping you continue your journey without stress or pressure. Volunteering abroad can be unpredictable, so travel insurance keeps you protected no matter what’s thrown at you.
When choosing your travel insurance, we recommend checking for policy exclusions and limits. For example, some insurers won’t cover incidents caused by adventure activities, such as scuba diving, hiking and surfing. If you plan to enjoy these activities while in New Zealand, make sure your insurance has you covered.
Volunteering in New Zealand is generally considered very safe for UK citizens. The country has low crime rates and well-developed infrastructure, and with Volunteering Solutions, you’ll be volunteering in open, safe spaces.
We take the safety of our volunteers very seriously, which is why we ensure security throughout your entire stay. Safety measures include:
You’ll get to meet fellow volunteers who you can spend evenings and weekends with, so you don’t have to explore the country alone if this concerns you. Our staff are located in-country and are available 24/7, on hand whenever you need them.
