Meet Maritza Dávila - Volunteer in Vietnam

Why did you choose to go to Vietnam?

I chose to go to Vietnam because it is a country that has gone through many wars and difficulties and still it stands strong, I believe they are a wonderful example of resilience but also I chose Vietnam because of it rich cultural heritage and incredible beautiful cities.

Why did you pick this program with Volunteering Solutions?

As a psychologist who loves working with children, I was particularly drawn to the Friendship Village project. After reviewing many projects I found that Volunteering Solutions  had this amazing program and it was exactly what I was looking for and all the support I got from them before starting was great as well as during all the duration of my program.

What do you wish someone had told you before you went abroad?

I think that the information I got from Volunteering Solutions was plenty and if you read it carefully before arriving at your program you will be very well prepared, I only wish someone had told me that the longest the better, I wish I had stayed longer, I was there for 8 weeks that went by so fast.

What’s your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

My time abroad as a volunteer was amazing, I don’t really have a favorite story but everyday moments filled with joy, laughs, hugs, games and the incredible happiness I felt as the children had small achievements. I think you need to be open to all kind of experiences and the reward will be great.

What made this experience unique and special?

I was inspired by the resilience of the children and the dedication of the staff, it was a place full of dignity, inclusion and human connection. And it was even more special for me because I had the opportunity to participate in the teachers day event performing a dance with the rest of the teachers and I have the honor to wear the traditional Ao Dai.

What made this trip meaningful to you, or how did it change you?

This experience reinforced my commitment to continue working with children and individuals in need in any part of the world where help is needed. It reshaped my understanding of service, Volunteering at Friendship Village was transformative, both personally and professionally.
